The Countdown Is On - Swift Current Set to Host Major Sporting Event

In just 100 days Swift Current will host more than 1,700 participants at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games.

“Saskatchewan is excited to host the Western Canada Summer Games for a fifth time,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said.  “Hosting this exciting event allows us to showcase our community pride, great volunteerism and provide a stepping stone for athletes to compete on national and international stages.  Thank you to Swift Current for being gracious hosts and best of luck to all the participants.”

From August 9 to 18, Swift Current will be the centre of attraction for spectators, athletes, coaches, mission staff, officials and volunteers at the Western Canada Summer Games.  There will be 16 summer sports featuring young athletes, para sport and special Olympians from six provinces and territories.  Hosting the Western Canada Summer Games generates tourism and economic benefits for the host region of Swift Current.

“The City of Swift Current is thrilled to be the host of the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games,” Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault said.  “The games promise to bring the spirit of competition and camaraderie to the doorstep of our community while having a significant, positive impact on our local economy.  I join our entire community in welcoming our provincial and territorial friends to Swift Current in August for what will be an unforgettable event.”

This event requires the helping hands of more than 2,000 volunteers.  Melissa Shaw and Mark Benesh, volunteer co-chairs, have been working hard to organize this large southwest Saskatchewan event.

“We are proud to be part of this event, which is the largest ever to be held in Swift Current and the southwest region,” Western Canada Summer Games Co-chairs Shaw and Benesh said.  “It really is our time to showcase our region while providing a conduit for athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers to pursue new levels of excellence.”

The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games are still looking for the enthusiasm and hospitality of volunteers to help out with the Games.
