New Visitor Centre Coming to Buffalo Pound Provincial Park

The former ski chalet building at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, originally constructed in 1972, will be renovated and converted into a modern, multi-purpose visitor centre.  Regina-based Westridge Construction Ltd. will begin work on the project this summer.  The visitor centre renovation is expected to cost more than $1.1 million and is anticipated to open to the public in summer 2022.

"Buffalo Pound is a beautiful park with so much for visitors to enjoy," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said.  "The repurposed visitor centre will be a great addition, serving many purposes that will benefit a number of park users well into the future."

The visitor centre will serve as a hub for interpretive programs and a gathering point for park visitors, including hiking and biking enthusiasts.  The new centre will feature space for a coffee shop and kiosks for future park businesses.

"The selection of the construction team is an important milestone for this project," SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Jim Reiter said.  "This new visitor centre will not only provide park visitors a gathering place for years to come, its construction will support our economy as we recover from the global pandemic and continue to build a strong Saskatchewan."

Renovation work will involve selective demolition and complete interior and exterior refurbishment of both levels of the building, including related electrical and mechanical work.  Exterior work will include a large new deck complete with an accessible ramp and related site developments.

The visitor centre refurbishment is funded through the provincial stimulus program and is part of government's more than $18.1 million investment in park facilities and infrastructure for 2021-22.  This year's planned improvements in provincial parks will see capital investment and preventative maintenance total nearly $160 million since 2007.

Visitors to Buffalo Pound can enjoy a number of activities, including the new swimming pool, Sask Aquatics new inflatable waterpark, hiking and biking trails, and mini golf and axe throwing at Squirrely Putt & Play.
