MLA Kevin Doherty Leaving Politics
Saskatchewan Party MLA Kevin Doherty today announced that he is leaving politics to pursue opportunities in the private sector.
Doherty is the MLA for Regina Northeast. He was first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2016. Doherty served as Minister of a number of different portfolios, including Parks, Culture and Sport, Finance, and Advanced Education.
“I want to thank the residents of Regina Northeast for placing their confidence in me in the last two elections,” Doherty said. “It has been an honour to serve as their MLA.
“I also want to thank all of my caucus colleagues that I have served with over the past six years, including former Premier Wall and our new Premier Scott Moe. Even though I am leaving political life, I will continue to be a strong supporter of Premier Moe and our Saskatchewan Party government.”
Premier Moe thanked Doherty for his service to the province.
“Kevin has been a tremendous caucus and cabinet colleague and I will miss working with him,” Moe said. “Kevin showed tremendous resolve and leadership as Finance Minister in guiding last year’s budget process, in which our government made some difficult but necessary decisions to reduce our dependence on resource revenue and keep Saskatchewan strong.”
Doherty’s resignation is effective March 12. A by-election will be called within 6 months.
