Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Opens New School in Stonebridge
Students in the Saskatoon Stonebridge neighbourhood officially opened their new Catholic elementary school today. St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School was celebrated by students, families and the community, along with Education Minister Bronwyn Eyre and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.
“It has been a long journey to get our six new schools, including St. Kateri, ready to welcome students and families,” Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Board of Education Chair Diane Boyko said. “I can safely speak for everyone in the division that it is all worth it when we see those smiling faces walk into this wonderfully bright, open and inviting school.”
St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School has many state-of-the-art features, including an innovative library resource centre that flows between the first and second floor and creates a comfortable and inviting environment for students to learn, outdoor learning space, band and visual arts rooms, and multipurpose space.
“St. Kateri is literally right in the heart of Stonebridge, which is appropriate since the building will be the heart of this vibrant community,” St. Kateri principal Kent Gauthier said. “The school’s staff are excited to help shape a strong, faith-filled school community with our students and families. It’s really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
St. Kateri shares space with Chief Whitecap School as part of the Joint-Use Schools Project, which includes 18 new elementary schools at nine locations in Saskatoon, Regina, Martensville and Warman.
Each joint-use school contains a 90-space child care centre as well as community space.
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $1.5 billion toward 67 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
