Government To Support Literacy And Workplace Programming For Under-Represented Populations In Saskatoon
Today, the Government of Saskatchewan announced funding toward literacy programming and workforce development for job seekers facing multiple barriers to employment in Saskatoon’s labour market.
The Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre will receive $314,000 to administer the Creating Opportunities Strategy that supports under-represented populations in transitioning to employment. There are two programs offered through the Creating Opportunities Strategy - theoretical learning and applied learning. Participants will define career goals, create realistic action plans and improve on essential skills required for the workplace or classroom. Participants leave the programs ready to complete their education and/or find long-term employment.
“Programs dedicated to ensuring under-represented populations are able to successfully participate in Saskatoon’s workforce are fundamental,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Our government’s partnership with the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre continues to support our province’s most vulnerable people on their path to independence and assists in addressing poverty and hunger rates in Saskatchewan.”
“The Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre believes that every individual seeking employment or returning to school faces challenges that are uniquely their own,” Creating Opportunities Program Manager Amber Clare said. “The goal of the Creating Opportunities Strategy is to meet people where they’re at in order to support their journey on a different path – for some that means gaining employment, for others that means creating new healthy routines. Whatever that looks like, our partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan allows our organization to support individuals on their journey.”
The Creating Opportunities Strategy serves clients who are 16 or older and are facing barriers to employment and/or returning to school.
